Vita Coco Coconut Oil Review

Vita Coco – Coconut Oil – 100% Raw and Organic

I have been lucky enough to trial out a product recently that I have never used before. Not knowing what to expect, but having heard great things I was excited to see the results.
VitaCVita Coco sent me this fabulous box with a sample for me to use. Its description reads, ‘Eat It • Wear It • Swear By It’. Even before it arrived to me I already knew how I first wanted to use the coconut oil.

VitaCinBoxSWMy hair is naturally curly and can be quite dry. I have read about a number of celebrities who swear by regular coconut oil hair treatments. After doing some reading I decided on the best way to test if the product would work on my hair. I would photograph myself during the initial day of testing to determine visual differences. What I hoped to see was shiny and smoother hair after the first use.

VCHair6

The following set of images show the status of my hair during each aspect of this review, and I will then describe the final look and feel after the experience of using coconut oil.

VCHair1

This is how my hair would normally be, a mixture of waves and curls, and it usually has quite a lot of volume. It can often look messy and I have to tame it most mornings with spray.

Prior to applying I brushed my hair teasing out all of the curls and any knots so that it was easy to smooth the oil through. This next photograph shows my hair after the brushing; as you can see it’s quite frizzy and is certainly dry to touch.

VCHair2

Now for the product. I first applied the coconut through the lengths of my hair focusing mainly on the ends because that is where a lot of dryness occurs in my hair. I then tied my hair up and left the oil on my hair for the next 4 hours so that it could nourish it. I have considerably long hair but I didn’t use a great deal of the oil, it went a long way which was a nice surprise.

Once the 4 hours were up I washed my hair with my regular shampoo and conditioner and took gentle care when rinsing it.

When blow drying my hair I used a medium heat, and like I normally use with my hair type, a diffuser. Just scrunching my hair lightly as it dried, I could immediately feel the variation from a few hours earlier. This is the image I took after my hair was thoroughly dried.

VCHair4

As you can see from my images the difference is clear, my curls are more defined and the hair surface is shiny. I was also impressed with how soft my hair felt, even two days later it’s still soft to touch and I have found it to be more manageable.

I will definitely continue to use this product on my hair and I have decided that that will be once every fortnight, that should be enough to maintain the softness in my hair now that the warmer months have arrived.

VitaCJarSo what else can you use this coconut oil for? Cooking is one option, and I have a wonderful curry recipe that I plan to use it on. I would normally buy dried coconut but I think that the raw coconut may mix better and be more cost effective, because it’s so versatile in this state.

Another use is on the skin, if you have dry patches, and I will no doubt give that a try as well at some stage. I can imagine it being very handy in Winter. And I do plan to use it on my skin once I’ve finished making my hair look all the more amazing!

Not only that but I have also heard of people using this raw coconut as a makeup remover for more stubborn aspects of makeup, as well as for use when shaving your legs to achieve smooth and supple skin. Well in my opinion both of these things are worth a go regardless of the outcome, but there isn’t smoke without fire, people are using this stuff for all sorts.

The great thing about coconut oil in this form, is that it can go such a long way, a jar of this size will last you a while. And because it’s uses are so many, a jar of this product can live in your bathroom, your bedroom and your kitchen!

I want to thank Vita Coco for sending me this fantastic product, it will be a firm purchase of mine for the foreseeable future, and I’m so happy that I have had this opportunity to review it. It is fast becoming one of my regular products to use.

If you’re interested in purchasing this wonderful product you can find it at a majority of Boots stores.

I hope you have enjoyed this review, I know I have enjoyed trying something new!

10 Items to Spring Transition your Home for under £10

We all love what makes our houses feel like home, whether that’s a favourite sofa you picked out or a feature wall with wallpaper you once longed for. But when it comes to transitioning your home from the darker winter months into spring and then summer, it can be difficult to make those subtle changes affordable.

I admit I’m not one for too much clutter, but I adore cushions and throws, as well as photo frames and vases. In this post I’m going to show you my top 10 home picks for spring 2016, including where you can get them.

First of all we’ve got cushions and other fabric accessories. Now depending on your type of suite and fabric, you would have to make the right choices for you. But here are some bright spring cushions that can help you bring that bright feeling into your home.
These items range from £1.49 each to £4.99 each. The plainly coloured Cushions (items 1 and 3) can be bought in a range of colours and fabrics, the Fleece Throws (item 2) the same. They are an inexpensive way to brighten up a room especially if you have a dull coloured settee or chair. Or you could go for something more summer specific, like a cushion that has pictures like item number 4. Whatever you decide there are dozens of places you can buy cushions from. And another way to save money too, is to purchase cushion covers and place them over old ones you already own.

1. Dunelm £1.49 – £4.99 http://www.dunelm.com/category/home-and-furniture/home-furnishings/cushions?cm_mmc=ppc_google-_-PSB%20-%20Cushions%20-%20Brand%20-%20New-_-Brand%20-%20Cushions%20-%20Exact-_-dunelm%20cushions&gclid=CjwKEAiAmo_CBRC9qbGQssjqi28SJABYTgZxGemHrQrNVx3x20C8BgQgtEyRitblkom59rY3myr8oxoC7wvw_wcB
2. Dunelm £4.99
3. Argos £4.99
4. Tesco Direct £4.00 http://www.tesco.com/direct/magnificent-retro-cushion/128-6804.prd?skuId=128-6804

3.ArgosCushion 4.TescoCushion

Next I’m going to talk about ornaments, be that frames, clocks or vases. Even a singular item can make a difference to a room if it’s placed in it correctly. A new centrepiece like a clock or a canvas can really make a room look like new. And you can always revamp something that you already have. An old vase can be filled with false flowers or even coloured stones or glass gems.
5. Red Barrel Vase is £4.99 from Argos. 6. Silver Frame £6.99 from Dunelm. 7. Dream Canvas £7.99. 8. Rustic Shabby Chic Butterfly / Paris Wall Clock £7.99 – £10.00 from Amazon. 9. Sass and Belle Floral Square Photo Frame £7.33 from Amazon. 10. Crackle Glass Vase £7.99 from Dunelm.

There are some great quality affordable items on the market right now. I often look at Dunlem, Argos, search through Amazon and visit TK Maxx Homesense for most of my homewares. I bought a large glass vase for £6 from my local TK Maxx and filled the base with clear crystals and topped those with a battery operated light set. Here is my vase, the finished look when illuminated.

Lights Two

And finally I’m going to show you another of my homemade light ornaments I’ve created. I saw this idea a few months back using glass boxes but I thought why do the lights need to be inside glass, what about vases and pots too, so I began to experiment. This is my finished result, using a white pot, not only does the colour stand out but they’re easy enough to place in most rooms. You can get battery operated fairy lights in a variety of place and these only cost me £1.49. This was once a candle holder, and you can use all sorts of pots from your home and give them a new lease of life in your home.

Lights One

I hope you have enjoyed this post and seen some things that you might like to add to your own homes. If not then at least you have received some inspiration from the items I have shared that are available right now for less than £10 an item. Whether it be for your home or as a gift for someone, it’s always nice to have something new.

Seven Ways I Wear Skinny Jeans

Skinny Jeans, who doesn’t own a pair? I absolutely love them! Would you believe me when I said I had nine pairs and all a different colour? Well I do, because I think they are not only comfortable but so versatile.

So today’s blog post is all about how I wear my jeans. I will be including lots of photographs in this piece and you’ll notice that I wore my black skinny jeans for each photograph, that is because they are my go to colour, they go with everything!

If anybody wants to know where any of the items I’m wearing are bought from then please leave me some comments, I would be more than happy to share my fashion buys with you.

SkinnyJeansOne Outfit 1. Skinny Jeans, Owls T-shirt, short sleeved Lace Cardigan and Black Boots.
Where to Wear: I love ensembles like this one, perfect for shopping and day trips, you can wear a thicker cardigan if its cooler weather and ditch it when its warm. This style is also great with flat shoes and sandals for the summer months.

SkinnyJeansFiveeOutfit 2. Skinny Jeans, Flowing Dip Hem Shell Top and Black Shoe Boots
Where to Wear: I really like to pull off a sophisticated look while still wearing my comfortable jeans. This type of top looks great dressed up or dressed down. If I were going out for a meal to a good restaurant I might wear something like this. High heeled shoe boots and a leather jacket pair really well with a flowing top such as the one I’m wearing here. You can add multiple accessories such as a long necklace and an arm full of bangles to complete the outfit.

SkinnyJeansFourrOutfit 3. Skinny Jeans, short sleeved Bold Print T-shirt and printed Dolly Shoes.
Where to Wear: Everyone can pull of a bold print look and tops like this look great with plain jeans. I particularly like T-shirts that make your torso the main focus point on an outfit. This yellow tee is both bold and bright and I associate it with Summer flowers and sunshine when I see it. Pair with a long sleeved cardigan or stay as you are if it’s warm enough.

SkinnyJeansSixxOutfit 4. Skinny Jeans, Patterned Vest Top and Dolly Shoes
Where to Wear: A look more for the Summer months like a day at the beach, but also great if you’re off out to a large shopping centre they’re generally quite warm. Skinny Jeans and a tight fitting Vest Top can be very flattering by hugging your curves, even very little ones like I have! I would say go for a bold or patterned vest rather than a plain one, it really makes a statement.

SkinnyJeansThreeeOutfit 5. Skinny Jeans, Striped Jumper and Black Boots
Where to Wear: What I love during the not-so-warmer months of the year in the UK, are jumpers! You can get away with wearing thin ones such as this one, with a vest or t-shirt underneath them. You won’t need to layer up too much and it’s a look you can pull off pretty much anywhere you go. I have paired with boots because we do get a fair bit of rain in the country. Boots are my go-to footwear unless it’s the height of Summer and then I would have paired this outfit with either sandals or flat dolly shoes.

SkinnyJeansTwoOutfit 6. Grey Jumper Dress with black skinny jeans and boots.
Where to Wear: I love this style when I’m out clothes shopping or casually out with friends. With only two pieces of clothing to remove if you decide to go into a changing room, it’s fast and carefree but stylish. The long sleeves keep you warm in the cooler months too, and this means you don’t always need to take a coat with you unless its physically raining. I nearly always wear boots with the jumper dresses I own, unless it’s very warm, and then in most cases I wouldn’t wear these jumpers anyway. They do go with flat shoes though if you own a nice pair of loafers for example.

SkinnyJeansSevennOutfit 7. Skinny Jeans, Statement T-shirt and Dolly Shoes.
Where to Wear: There is nothing I love more than T-shirts and Tops with minimal but incredible detail. The lace hem on the bottom and sleeve of this top make it appealing to look at without having over the top amounts on the piece. This tee allows you to wear a lovely necklace and not detract from the beautiful lace around your hips and arms. I have paired this outfit with Dolly Shoes again but it’s such a versatile top you could wear anything. It’s also such a great piece you could wear it any time of the year, layer it up with cardigans but leaving the centre part of your torso clear so the pretty lace can be seen and enjoyed.

So there you have it, the seven ways I wear my skinny jeans! And if anyone is interested in any brands and stores where I made my purchases then please send me a comment. I hope you’ve enjoyed this post today, a little insight into what’s inside my wardrobe 🙂

The Importance of Water

I have always been a supporter of drinking lots of water. I have never had any problem in drinking pints of the stuff every day. Sometimes I drink it plain, sometimes it’s flavoured and occasionally with a dash of squash thrown in. But the most important thing about water is just getting it into your body in the first place.

For anyone who does struggle with drinking water, here are a few of my tips to getting more into your every day routine. The first is to buy a sports cap bottle. It might sound a little odd, but not having to unscrew a lid, and just flicking up a cap and drinking out of it, saves time and is more convenient if you’re someone who is always on the go. You can also drink more this way than you would do if you were sipping from the top of an open bottle.

Something else that I always do, is to have a small glass of water half an hour before every meal. By doing this it kick starts your digestive system and gets it ready to receive the food you’re about to devour, this also helps to control appetite as well.

Most people will insist that the recommended daily amount of water you need to consume is eight glasses. But this doesn’t take into consideration warm weather, sweating if you exercise and other daily situations such as health and lifestyle. The actual amount of water you need to drink as an adult varies from eight to sixteen glasses a day. Some people struggle with this amount and many adults substitute water for things like tea and energy drinks. Although these hydrate you they don’t have the benefits that plain water does. My tip for you is to always keep water to hand, either in a bottle or a glass. If you’re on the go a lot always carry a bottle with you. Another tip is to drink one glass of water when you wake up in the morning that is before you eat anything or go about your daily routine. This helps to kick start the digestive system and can lower blood pressure too.

DripSW

The benefits of drinking more water can be noticed within a couple of days. Your body is made of approximately 60% water, this helps transport nutrients in the body and regulate body temperature among other things. When you are made of so much liquid this means that dehydration is never far away if you don’t look after yourself. Being dehydrated can cause your skin to dry up and for your kidney function to decline in efficiency. These are just some of the reasons why you need to keep up those fluids. Your skin will look healthier and you’ll notice the difference in your concentration levels as well as your muscles. Drinking more water can help with muscle tiredness and it flushes out the toxins that cause illness and skin breakouts.

Robinson’s have been running promotions on both Twitter and Facebook to win their very cute glasses, I call mine my happy glass. Why is he happy? Because you’re drinking more water of course! Thank you again to Robinson’s for my wonderful glass.

RobinsonsFreebieSWI hope that you have enjoyed this blog post and I hope that perhaps I have inspired you (with the facts) to drink more water.

Learning To Bake One Brownie At A Time

I don’t know about you, but I love to cook. Not every meal and not every single day, as I’m sure we all enjoy take out on occasion. But seriously, I do love cooking. I’ve never been a very good baker, which is something that I wanted to change.

My main inspiration in my cooking life has always been my Nan. When I was younger she taught me all about the kitchen, and got me started on some staple meals that I would remember for the rest of my life. I can cook a lasagne, a casserole or even a curry from memory, and I love experimenting with new flavours.

Once I had the meals of hers like these in my heart as well as my stomach, I knew I would cook them often and enjoy them. But the one thing I have always struggled with was baking, be it cakes or other savoury treats, most puddings just evaded my cooking talents.

Trial and error is one of the only ways to beat the baking I have found. I have baked countless cakes and puddings that haven’t ended up being edible, and after a certain number you almost don’t want to waste anymore of your time and money. For a good while I didn’t cook puddings, then I tried an apple crumble again (a different recipe) and I began to bake with chocolate again too.

I found a recipe for triple chocolate brownies recently. I think a good recipe can make all the difference, especially if you are a self-taught cook. When I cooked these particular brownies to my surprise it was a complete success! I haven’t put that down to me though. All I was doing was following the recipe step by step, and I based the cooking time solely on my oven and not on the recipes parameters. I was so pleased with the result that I plan to make some more, and that has never happened to me before with any other aspect of my baking.

So the finished result, needless to say I am just a little bit proud of them. Oh, and they didn’t last long, so I did something right! And I will definitely be making them again… Soon…

So what is the moral and the reason that I have written this blog post today? To say to all of you out there who say you can’t cook, I’m here to say you can!
I can now proudly say that I don’t bake well but I can bake something! And that leap is something we can all achieve, if we just try…

Spring Cleaning and De-cluttering your Home

SpringCleaningSWSpring Cleaning

Most of us will dislike the prospect of a spring clean around the home, but it can be very beneficial. Not only do we clear out our drawers and cupboards of unwanted items, but we make space for the new. And there is a certain satisfaction that I always get, when you look at how tidy and clean something is. In this blog post I’m going to be outlining three ways in which I have had a spring clean in my own home, and the ways I like to de-clutter too.

Here is one example of spring cleaning for you. No doubt we all have that one drawer in the kitchen where everything miscellaneous goes. If you have one of these suspects in your house, why not take half an hour on the weekend to go through it and clear it out. No doubt there will be old takeaway menus, receipts, sauce sachets and out of date items that can all be disposed of. Recycle what you can and make some space for this year’s items. Elastic bands can come in handy to separate areas inside the drawer, or an old cutlery tray if you have a spare. It depends what you use your kitchen drawer for, but if you need to divide the items, you can make the space work to your advantage. If you have things like old Tupperware boxes to get rid of, ones without lids can be especially useful. They’re great for storing sauce sachets in or small bits that would otherwise get lost. Line them up alongside your neatly stacked takeaway menus, and fill them with bits you find that need keeping.

Another example that could usually do with going through is your medicine cabinet, or your bathroom cupboard, wherever you keep the majority of your toiletries. Most of us don’t realise how much we accumulate, so here is a handy tip from me to you, for spring cleaning the lot and then keeping it tidy. You’ll need a piece of paper and a pen, a plastic bag for all the bits that need to be thrown away, and another plastic bag for items that can be recycled such as empty bottles and boxes.
First of all you need to empty the drawer, the shelf, the unit or what have you, and lay the items out. (I would do this on an old towel so if anything is sticky it doesn’t make a mess). Make a list of all the things you can keep, that are in date and appropriate. Throw away any medicines that are out of date, same goes for any products that may have gone bad. A good tip is to smell them and look inside to see if they have gone solid or a funny colour, if you aren’t sure then bin them. And cleaning the area down you can put the items back into place, and stick the list you just made on the inside of the door or along the side of the items. That way you won’t need to search the whole thing when trying to see if you’ve got a product, you simply consult the list.
You may also need to make a list now of the items that need replacing, but first ask yourself this, if the products you’re throwing out have been in there a long time, do you need to replace them at all?

My final spring clean idea comes from something I actually do on a three month basis. Kitchen cupboards! It’s a good idea to rotate the items on your shelves, to make sure nothing is going out of date, especially if you have a lot of boxes such as cereal and biscuits that easily go stale. It sounds simple enough, but a lot of people just refill the empty parts of their kitchen when they go shopping and don’t bring the older items out and place them to the front. We are all guilty of this, especially if we don’t have the time due to family and other commitments. But even if you just do this seasonally, you might save yourself some money. And you may also find a nice food or drink item you forgot all about at the back of your ‘adult food only’ cupboard… Making a list of what foods you have while putting them away can also help you to save on your next weekly shop. Towards the end of each month, it can be a good idea to write a meal plan, and use up any foods that might already be opened or close to a use-by date. This all contributes to a clean out and a use up of products we may have had to throw out. Saving money and making space in your kitchen.

StorageSolutions1SWWays to De-clutter and Save Space

As human beings we often accumulate things and eventually run out of space. So if your home is in need of a tidy up then hopefully these ideas will give you some inspiration. And there are ways it can be done without throwing everything out.
If you’re a person like me who keeps a lot of things but wants everything to still be neat and tidy, it can be difficult to find a happy compromise. I have found that making the most of any given space needs to be worked out before deciding where to put things.
So here are my top ways in which to de-clutter, maximise and save space in all aspects of your home.

One example I used recently to save space while doing my yearly wardrobe clear out, was to remove the thicker items and fold them up. I placed all thick trousers such as jeans, and thick jumpers, in a drawer instead of letting them take up hanging space. By folding and rolling them neatly and using good special awareness, you can maximise your wardrobe space. Obviously throw things out if you no longer fit in them or they are too worn, and it’s always good to give what you no longer want to a charity or a homeless shelter too if you can.

Something else that is really handy for wardrobes, especially if you have spare space at the bottom, is collapsible boxes! Ikea is just one of the many places who sell these and I think they are amazing! You buy them flat packed, and then use the zip and folding sides to create the three dimensional box. They come in a range of sizes and colours, and can be used to store all sorts of items.
I use mine for scarves, hats, as well as summer clothes. I also use some smaller versions of them for belts and other accessories that I don’t wear often too.
These great storage solutions allow you to be organised without things getting tangled together. By using a variety of coloured boxes you would always know which box to reach for when you need something.

SkubbBoxes

Another wonderful thing that Ikea do is drawer dividers. These are similar to the boxes I mentioned above, but on a much smaller scale. They can be used to separate items in drawers. Socks, underwear and makeup products are just some of the ways I use mine to organise things in my largest chest of drawers. They can be great also in a bedside unit because that’s one of the places so much miscellaneous stuff can accumulate in over time, they allow for you to organise items in a much neater way.

If you’re after some sturdier boxes, either for children’s items or preferably ones with lids on, then look no further than the ‘really useful boxes’ company. They have a great selection of boxes, some small enough to store buttons and jewellery inside, others so large you can store them under beds or in the loft space. We have a huge number in our house, used in all sizes and for all manner of things. One thing I do love is that they are really strong and durable and also easily stackable.

StorageSolutions2SW

Another item that I purchased recently in order to save space was a storage mirror from Argos. This fantastic piece of furniture doesn’t take up a lot of room because it has its own stand, and it has a great deal of storage space inside for all manners of jewellery and accessories.
There are many pieces out there for purchase that can be useful in smaller homes, perfect if you need more space for items that you don’t want laying about on surfaces.
I can recommend this mirror very highly for both quality and price, I couldn’t believe how much storage there was inside, it’s size has really been used to maximum effect.

ArgosMirror

My final way in which I save space is to de-clutter the paperwork in my life once a year. It’s amazing how much space thin pieces of paper take up when put together. If you’ve had receipts and statements for more than a few years you can normally get rid of them unless you have some sort of warranty with an item, such as electronics. We all keep so much and accumulate so many things in our lives, by taking an hour or so every few months, we can maximise our space and clear out what we no longer need.

If you need any more encouragement to have a clear out then look for local charities and shops who are after donations of toys and clothes, and see if you can do your bit for your local area.

I hope you have found some inspiration in this post, and can now creatively save space and de-clutter your homes.

National Fragrance Day

In honour of National Fragrance Day I thought I would show you what my 3 favourite perfumes are and why I love them.

The first is the wonderful and delicate Emporio Armani Diamonds which I normally wear on date night. I did a little research today to find out why it could be that I loved this scent so much. Well it turns out the top notes of this particular perfume are Lychee and Raspberry (I love to eat raspberries). The flower scents include Lily of the Valley, Roses and Freesia. Even though this perfume was launched in 2007 I didn’t add it to my collection until 2012, and it’s still very popular it seems.

Perfume3SW

My second go-to scent for days out is the gorgeous Giorgio Armani ‘Acqua di Gioia’. This is a perfume that as soon as I had smelt it I wanted it. Sometimes a scent just suits you, well this is mine. Launched in 2010 I bought this scent that same year after sampling it in a local store. The top notes of this scent include Mint leaves (crushed) as well as Jasmine, and it has an aquatic heart note too.

Perfume2SW

And my final perfume that I normally where on a night out is Dolce & Gabbana ‘The One’. I have always adored the original, which came out in 2006. My (now husband) partner had bought it for me, I think for a birthday, and as soon as I opened it I was smitten with the scent. This perfume has top notes that include Bergamot, Lychee and Peach. As well as these it’s heart notes of Madonna lily, exotic fruits, Jasmine and Plum, and base notes of Vanilla and Musk. Over all a very complex perfume compared to my other favourites it seems.

Perfume1SW

So it we can see from my favourites that a pattern emerges. I like perfumes that smell of Roses and Lily’s and whose top notes often include Jasmine and Raspberries. It is very interesting when you dissect the items from your routines, and perhaps something to think about when it’s time to try a new perfume.

Happy National Fragrance Day every one.

Review of my Purchase from Awesome Wooden Gifts

Reviewing An Awesome Wooden Gifts Purchase

I love art and craft and participate in it on a regular basis. I also have a total appreciation for those who are very talented in areas that I am not. So when I decided how I wanted my blog posts to look, I wanted to purchase some tiny mushrooms. And thanks to other craft pages on Facebook helping me out, I managed to find this page Awesome Wooden Gifts where Tabitha created exactly what I wanted for my blog.

She was very accommodating to me, and within a few days I had my very own wooden mushroom set. So if anybody else is looking for unique painted gifts made from wood, you can check out her page.

TinyMushroomsSW

Here are my little mushrooms, they are really cute, and are going to add pops of colour to my blog posts when I review my items. Look out for them appearing in my photographs when my new posts go up!

Fashion Trends We Will See This Season SS16

Spring is upon us! Bring on the warmer weather and the longer days! There is nothing that I love more than to roll up the jumpers that have gotten me through the winter (I really feel the cold) and pull out my summer dresses. The great thing about SS16 so far, is that for those of us who hold on to fashion items (yes hoard! Okay I hoard clothes!) It’s where we bring out the ‘vintage’ pieces and are suddenly on trend again. Yay for us!

So what is popular right now that you can go down the high street or jump on the internet and find? – especially if you aren’t a hoarder like me! Well I believe there is something for everyone this season. Sometimes you cannot say that about fashion, but this Spring and Summer, regardless of how skinny or how curvy you may be, I think the majority of people can pull off the majority of the looks I’m about to go into more detail about.

Where to begin… For the fashion conscious among us it’s the time where we really start to take notice of what is being paraded up and down the fashion weeks. I was very happy to discover that both Lace and Stripes are in! I do have a soft spot for both of these styles. Another selection of pieces I kept coming across was big on bold colour and prints. Block prints and brighter colours were favoured. Something else that is making a comeback this year is the Tartan and Gingham style print, often used in dresses and skirts, this look is so versatile. I’m sure anyone who has lived through the 1990’s will remember what the fashion was like, dresses and jackets with puffy sleeves and of course the metallic and sequins phase! Well these things are also making a comeback it seems! So not only that, but the late 90’s early 2000’s saw lots of slip dresses become fashionable, along with statement jewellery pieces.

But the most popular look with the models this season seems to be the trend of the ‘cold shoulder’. Whether regarding a top or a dress, there are many ways to adopt this style. It was seen throughout the early fashion weeks and is a look that women of all ages can pull off. Women with sophistication have been using its stylish yet sexy appeal to bare skin for decades.

So what have I been buying I hear you ask? Well here are some snapshots of my most recent purchases, some of which are from the end of last year when these trends were just coming into season. If you can still get these items or something similar, I will be supplying links for you at the end of the post (look out for the numbers as a reference to which item).

Starting with Lace, which is a firm favourite of mine. It can make dresses look sophisticated and make tops classier. I bought this beautiful dress from BooHoo (1). The attention to detail is absolutely stunning, as you can see in my images of both the full dress and the close up of the lace detail. And it looks far better on your body with the shade of your skin underneath than it would ever look on a hanger. Not only that but it was so comfortable to wear you could forget you even had it on. If you want something that shows some elegance without having to bare too much skin then this is the kind of dress for you. BooHoo has some wonderful Lace focused pieces. I chose this one simply because of my size and my height. I was very happy with the quality of the material and it also washed well after I wore it.

Detail in Lace Dress ProcSW

On to Stripes now, and I suppose some of these can also be classed under the block colour trend as well. I have so many striped items in my wardrobes, tops and dresses mostly, but I just love how stripes can make you look. Not only that but you can wear stripes in many ways, with heels and a necklace for a night out, or just throw on a stripy jumper to go down to the supermarket in. For whatever reason you buy something with stripes, just make sure it will flatter your figure. Some people look better with larger stripes and others benefit from thinner and more subtle striped pieces. The photograph I am sharing with you contains some of my pieces from Dorothy Perkins purchased over the past 3 months. Although they are all jumper dresses, the versatility of these and the comfort you get from wearing them, makes it all worthwhile. We all want to look nice and sometimes you need an item that is both easy to wear but can also look good. Dress it up with a nice jacket and heels, or they go perfectly well with leggings or jeans on a dress down day. All of these dresses of mine in the photograph (2) wear and wash well.
I have many stripy dresses in my wardrobe too, and they vary in material. I do prefer a thicker dress, one that I can wear all year around, but that’s mainly because I despise tights!

If you’re thinking about giving stripes a go then there are several places doing some beautiful striped items right now. Those I’ve researched include Pretty Little Thing, Dorothy Perkins, BooHoo, Next and New Look. Check them out and find something you love.

The final look that I am going to talk about I am not actually that familiar with, and that is the Tartan and Gingham style of clothing. I have a check dress (3) which is pretty cool because it has two pockets on the front which is detail that really adds to the piece. Unless prints like this make your eyes go funny, it really makes a statement to wear. In my opinion you need to pair an item such as this with plain accessories so it doesn’t take away from the detail of the article. You want people to see the dress or skirt as a statement piece, that’s why your eyes are drawn to its pattern. You can wear this thin strap style with a t-shirt underneath, or on a warm day just as it is. So at least if this trend stays in through to the Autumn, I can wear this dress knowing I’m still in fashion.

7 Ways to be more Positive and spread Positivity

SevernWishesBlogImage1res
There is a strong belief that being positive can affect your life for the better. I am a strong believer in the way that positive thoughts and actions can make those difficult days more bearable. We all go through things at times in our lives that can benefit from being more positive. So I wanted to share with you today, my 7 favourite ways to be positive and how to spread positivity.

1. Smile
Smiling, pretty simple really. It’s incredible how a smile can make, not only your own day better, but by smiling at a colleague, a loved one or even a stranger without provocation can cause a chain reaction. We all know that smiling is the reason for having positive emotional content, whether it’s seeing a friend in the street or watching a cute kitten on a video. By smiling at will we are stimulating our brain to think that it is experiencing something positive and therefore it makes us feel good. Here is something interesting, the next time you’re out walking to somewhere pick a random person to smile at, make sure you catch their eye, and see if they smile back, I almost guarantee they will, and it could make their day better too.

2. Share
I am a huge believer in ‘if it makes you happy it probably would make other people happy too’. For some of us that is sharing social media of kittens and puppies doing ridiculously cute acts, and for others it’s a really good joke! Either way, by sharing that small moment of happiness with others, you are putting it out there to benefit people other than yourself.

3. Talk
Well this one might seem an odd one, but talking really can help extinguish negative or sad thoughts. Whenever I feel low I tend to pick a family member on my phone and either hit dial or send them a text. It can be amazing to discuss things, especially if they are worries, because a problem shared really is a problem halved. More so if you are speaking with someone of any wisdom on their shoulders. Even if you don’t have a family member you can speak with, a friend or even a stranger can make all the difference. Seeing an issue from another person’s point of view can make them think differently about what is going on, and could help them through the tough time.

4. Hobbies
There’s nothing I like more than getting stuck into one of my hobbies. I do have a lot of them and it’s often difficult some days to decide what to do. If I am feeling particularly patient then arts and crafts will be on the agenda, however if I am agitated I might opt for a video game to take out frustrations… The point I am trying to make is that no matter who you are and what your means are, there will always be a hobby out there for you. Some hobbies are solitary and others require friends, but the best thing they can do is be a great way to take your mind off things, and even make new acquaintances.

5. Be Kind to Yourself
Sometimes this isn’t so obvious, especially if we are feeling down because we may reach for the television remote and the largest bar of chocolate we can find. But actually being kind to your body and mind can help your mood in a drastic way. Even a fifteen minute walk will give your brain an oxygen boost and the exercise releases endorphins. These create positive feelings and also reduce our perception of any pain we may be experiencing. Eating well can always help you feel more positive, getting plenty of natural vitamins and minerals, as well as enough water a day can really make a difference. Cooking can be really fun to try as well.

6. Sleep
For me, this is an obvious one. I love to just lounge about on a day off (until you remember all the things you need to do that day). But speaking honestly now, sleep is so important, you will definitely feel the benefits if you don’t already get enough hours a night. Adults need anywhere between 6 and 9 hours of sleep a night to function well. This doesn’t mean the nights of broken and interrupted sleep patterns though. This is often why so many people struggle with negative feelings that creep in during the later hours of the day when we are at our most tired. Take the time to rest; you will thank yourself for it, even if you can only afford one lie in each week, and your body will thank you too.

7. Being Grateful
One thing that I have always been a big believer in is that somewhere in the world someone is suffering more than you. Be thankful for all that you have and all that you are. We often neglect the simple things and take them for granted. But the great majority of us live fantastic lives, we have loved ones, we have social lives, we have food in our tummies and belongings we treasure. When something is really bothering me I try to take a timeout, to breathe slowly and to recall mentally all the things I’m most happy about and grateful for in my life. Sometimes the thing that upset you moments earlier seems small in comparison, and you can hold your head high knowing that you’ve overcome that moment of negativity. The positives almost always outweigh the negative thoughts, so don’t let them win. You’re worth more than that, you deserve to be happy.
